Abduction

What rating? Why?

  • Rating given by the BBFC was 12, as it features moderate violence, such as the fight scenes are fast paced and when a person is shot the impact is not shown. Instead we see blood patches on the person's clothes, doesn't show the actual killing and how it was done. It can't be a 15 or 18 rating certificate as it doesn't dwell on the pain and injury of others.

  • The hero (Nathan) only uses violence when it is necessary, if directly threatened or attacked.

Salt

What rating? Why?

  • Rating given by the BBFC was 15, as the sequences of strong violence; A woman being repeatedly beaten and smashed into a desk, a man being stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle (with emphasis on 'squelchy' sound effects) and a woman pulling a chain around a man’s neck to throttle him.

  • The film can't be 12/12A rating certificate as the guidelines state that there is mild violence and there should not be emphasis on injuries or pain. The film also can't be given an 18 rating certificate because the 'violence may be strong but does not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury'.

The Bourne legacy

What rating? Why?

  • Rating given by the BBFC was 12A, as there are many scenes including moderate violence which mainly occurred during fast-paced fights or shoot-outs. Also although there are heavy blows and some bullet impacts, there is little shown in terms of injury detail as at 12A, moderate violence is allowed but it should not dwell on detail; there is no emphasis on injuries or blood.

  • The film can't be given a 15 rating certificate as it does not contain strong violence and language. The film also can't be given an 18 rating certificate because the 'violence may be strong but does not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury'.

What certificate would I request for my film?

The certificate I would give for my film is a 15 rating certificate. This is because the film features strong use of violence. One example of this is, is a man being shot, showing the man falling with a blood going across the floor, another example is another man who is being repeatedly stabbed to death on the chest showing the blood on the knife also the man bleeding on the floor.

Why not a higher rating? The film cannot be given an 18 rating certificate because there is only strong violence and no features of sadistic or sexual violence. Also, the violence doesn't dwell on the infliction of pain/injury.

Why not a lower rating? The film cannot be given an 12/12A rating certificate because there is strong violence included such as the scene where the man is getting stabbed repeatedly to death and it shows the knife going directly in the man, so there are no cuts in between this which a 12A would do. Also there are aggressive uses of strong language.
