Downton Abbey

Examples of sound used in Downton Abbey

  • Sound of the bicycle moving - During that era, working class people would use bicycles in order to do their job of delivering newspapers to the upper class people, and upper class people would not ride in bicycles therefore the sound of the bike moving implies it's a working class person.

  • Bell ringing - Upper class people would use a bell to call their servants, in the clip this is used as the servants has to prepare the daily routine for the Lord. This shows the power of the upper class people having more power than the working class.

  • Classical music - There is a soft classical music playing as the man is walking down the staircase, which he is the 'Lord', this shows the power he has within the household and stereotypically classical music is associated with the upper class.

  • Sound of teapots, container lid being lifted - This is when the Lord is helping himself making his own breakfast, you could hear a loud noise when he places the lid back to its place. This implies the weight of the lid which means it is heavy, and within that era only the rich, upper class people would have access to that.
